PAGE/STAGE/SPACE, San Mei Gallery, London, 2024 curated by Motor Dance JournalGrowing up in the 1990s I developed a kind of romantic devotion to Eurotrance music, which I first encountered at the local fairground in my hometown of Loughborough (which has operated in the same market square since 1221). On its pilgrimage around Europe, the fair anachronistically tours paintings -- illuminated signs depicting famous female faces spray painted onto steel tableaux, which mysteriously fold out of lorries in the night. Each year I look up at them in the way you might a familiar wayside shrine or a Byzantine icon, a form of image making believed to conjure a direct channel of communication with the divine. Holy Prototype invokes these fantasy worlds in the form of a devotional object: a two-screen video diptych. Using video collaging techniques, the work presents female singers uprooted from Eurotrance music videos and isolated from their backing tracks, relocated within the form of the illuminated fairground sign. We formed a fake band and performed hard techno cover versions of songs which addressed the conflicted emotions we felt in visiting Venice, a place which is being destroyed by mass tourism. The songs addressed issues of guilt, parasitism, Sainthood and apocalypse, from Ship of Fools by the Doors to It’s a Sin by the Pet Shop Boys. Our performance is staged inside a confined, smoke-filled space, with an audience watching from outside through an internal window. For our residency in Venice, this space resembled a confession booth which we built from scrap materials found in the city. The installation housed a series of Venice-inspired videos, framed by golden single-use paper plates we found discarded on the street, commonly used across Venice to serve takeaway food to tourists. Images: Jeremiah Quinn. 100 Videos, 2023 Collaborative event For over a year, artist Darren Nixon and I (under the artist duo name Rowland’s Leaving) each made a 1 minute film every week which we published on Instagram. Our event 100 Videos was conceived as a means of presenting 100 of these videos to a live audience at the same time; recontextualising a formerly digital experience within a gallery setting. For 100 Videos we invite an audience of 100 people to become collaborators in the creation of our event by surrendering their smartphone on arrival. Each of these phones becomes a screen on which we present one of 100 videos, which are looped for the event’s duration of 100 minutes.&nbsp;Throughout, we spontaneously re-enact scenarios from some of our videos in a series of live action breakouts.100 Videos hinges on an unusual exchange of trust between audience and host through testing the limits of communal resource sharing. Produced by Turner Contemporary Gallery. Artist Mark Leckey invited me to stage a live work for Salamagundy, a variety show. The event featured the traditional set up of a curtained stage in front of a seated audience in the historic setting of Dreamland in Margate, an old fashioned amusement park. In lieu of a performance I created Fluchtpunkt (vanishing point; place of refuge), a suspenseful choreography of animated stagecraft. During the piece, a theatrical curtain parts to reveal a ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ style smoking doorway. A spotlight roves between the open curtain, the stage and the audience, accompanied by an audio track of sampled Eurodance vocals and extreme weather sounds (thunder and lighting, rain, wind). Using hostile elemental effects and odd moments of pause and tension, the work keeps its audience perpetually at arms length in anticipating a performer who never arrives,&nbsp;conjuring the space beyond the stage as a portal to a fantasy realm of the viewer’s own making. The work is highly adaptable and has been presented as a looped installation for galleries and club spaces, where the work becomes an immersive environment. “...A gestalt whose separate elements come together in an atmospheric manifestation of their conceptual elegance. Taking the viewer into the heart of its storm, in spite of its cues to dance – strobes, dry ice and a rhythmic soundtrack – it rewards a certain stillness. Static, the gallery-goer can give way to the experiences it offers; the dramatic approximations of thunder claps and running water, digitally contrived in a recording studio. Read from another perspective, its tumult acts as a reminder of the inescapability of the climate crisis. The piece combines visual motifs and musical gestures derived from the generic narrative tropes of opera. Denby’s review articulates Stravinsky’s final ballet Agon via an idiosyncratic stream of metaphors. Tha-at's right takes Denby at his word, translating his imagery back into the language of dance. The work was commissioned by An Assembly for a UK tour alongside pieces by composers Louis D’Heudieres and Charlie Usher.&nbsp; ‘...a seemingly disconnected parade of musical and choreographic gestures that swing - like Denby’s prose - between baroque grace and withering bathos. When this visual spectacle never arrives, the drama of ‘the show’ plays out in the subtle tension and power play between spectator and performer who cannot see one another. “Rowland Hill’s performance The Show is an exercise in high drama which is arresting in its simplicity. The work reduces the act of performing to its bare bones. Upon entering a small dark room, you are surrounded on all sides by a glimmering gold curtain raised a few inches from the floor, to reveal a pair of black stilettos attached to an unknown person on the other side.
