Body as Archive
Slade Research Centre, London
20th April, 2018
Curated by Rowland Hill, Amy Steel and Taylor Doyle
Body as Archive was a 5-hour programme of 18 live performance works and 10 films exploring gesture as both a communicative and performative act. The event was staged in promenade across five gallery spaces, prompting an audience to explore the space physically to experience the work. Props, materials and floor markings for each performance were left on display, making visible the mechanics of the event and creating a map with which the audience could use to navigate themselves. The works ranged between new music, wrestling, speech, kinetic sculpture, Japanese butoh, Rwandan ballet, and a performance disseminated via Instagram.
